Clubs and Competitive Opportunities

Scottish Student Sport is the governing body for sport within colleges and universities in Scotland. Most colleges and universities offer both recreational and competitive athletics opportunities, ranging from recreational running groups to structured clubs and competition for cross country, road, and track & field.

Winning Students 100 – Scholarship Programme

Winning Students 100

Scotland’s national sports scholarship programme

Winning Students 100 is a world-leading dual career programme that will support 100 of the most talented student athletes, pursuing academic attainment at a Higher Education or Further Education institution in Scotland. The following benefits will be provided to athletes in the programme:

  • Up to £3,000 funding
  • Academic flexibility to effectively balance academic and sporting pursuits.
  • Additional funding will be available for athletes originating from areas of high deprivation (as determined by the “Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation”

University of Edinburgh

Global Endurance Project – The University of Edinburgh’s Global Endurance Project was set up in partnership with Scottish Athletics to provide a performance development programme for athletes competing in middle & long distance track.

Performance Programme – Essential sporting and academic support for student athletes who are committed to succeeding on the international stage.

University Athletics Club – EUAC offers training for all levels of athletes, but also has strong links with the local club, Edinburgh AC to support other training needs.

Hares and Hounds Running Club – est.1890 ‘The Haries’ are the university’s cross country, hill, road and long-distance running club.

University of Stirling

Performance Programme – As Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence, they’re at the forefront of developing and supporting talented athletes to fulfil their sporting and academic potential.

University Athletics Club – SUAC offers training for all levels of athletes with their own coaching team at the university.

University of Glasgow

Performance Programme –  Provides support to talented student athletes as they manage the demands of competing in sport at the highest level whilst undertaking their University of Glasgow degree.

University Athletics Club – Glasgow University Athletics Club (GUAC) is one of the university’s oldest sports clubs. They’re also one of the most successful, having won the Scottish University Championships for 10 years

With athletes training and competing in sprints, middle distance, jumps and throws they cater for all events and abilities.

University of Strathclyde

Performance Programme – Scholarships are staggered by a Bronze, Silver and Gold package system, with all Scholars receiving a network of support from across the University.

This support includes flexible academic study options, strength and conditioning services at a world class facility, world-class sports science and medical support, athlete lifestyle support workshops, and financial assistance towards training and competition costs

University Athletics Club – Strathclyde Harriers is a social sports club with training for those interested in all running events. The club is completely inclusive of all those who want to try the sport with mixed abilities, genders, and ages – sessions are always tailored to suit everyone’s goals and abilities.

University of Aberdeen

Sport Scholarship – The University of Aberdeen supports a wide variety of sports bursary and scholarships schemes. These schemes are available to support elite student athletes seeking to combine academic and sporting excellence during their time at university.

The most common award is our Sports Bursary, sponsored by the Development Trust, which offers an exciting package of financial and wrap-around support for high-performing athletes in any sporting discipline.

University of Aberdeen Athletics Club -The club has two branches – the “Hares and Hounds” section, one of the oldest in the UK, for those who want to try long-distance & Cross-country. The club also has a Track and Field for athletes training and competing in sprints, middle distance, jumps and throws.

 

Robert Gordon University

University of the West of Scotland

Sport Scholarship – The Sport Scholarship programme at UWS aims to support those with the potential to be at the top of their sport.

UWS Sport Scholarships will provide financial scholarships as well as support for student athletes to access the University’s sports facilities, educational workshops, and sports science/medicine support.

Individual Athletes – UWS doesn’t have an athletics team but UWS will support members with entry costs to student championships. Student athletes can also apply for funding towards travel or accommodation for the event.

Heriot-Watt University

Sports Scholarship – Two tiers of Scholarships aimed at student-athletes who are competing at the top level of their sport.

Scholarships Include:

  • Academic Flexibility 
  • Oriam Membership  
  • Twice weekly Strength & Conditioning sessions with one of our Sport Scientists (individualised programming on a 1:12 coach-to-athlete ratio) 
  • Educational Workshops (Nutrition, Anti-doping, Sport Psychology, Performance Lifestyle) 
  • Sport Psychology (individual drop-ins and group workshops) 
  • Physiotherapy embedded within one weekly S&C session, or through an individual appointment provided on-site by Oriam Clinic 
  • Performance Lifestyle (1:1 consultations, Academic Flexibility) 
  • Fitness Testing 
  • Weekly Hydrotherapy pool recovery (massage jets, underwater treadmill, hot & cold Cryospas, sauna) 
  • Sport Scholar Kit (1/4 zip sweater, t-shirt & shorts) 

University Athletics Club – The club caters for a wide range of competitions including cross country, track and field, road and hill running.
