Five Scots picked by GB and NI for the 2022 World Indoors

Five top Scottish athletes are today celebrating selection by British Athletics for the 2022 World Indoors later this month.

The event is being held in Belgrade, Serbia, on March 18-20 and the GB and NI team will feature sprinter Adam Thomas, 800m runners Jenny Selman and Guy Learmonth and 1500m duo Erin Wallace and Neil Gourley.

Five Scots in an overall team of 33 athletes counts as a very strong representation. Indeed, it is the second highest ever for the World Indoors event (with eight having been picked for Birmingham back in 2018).

It’s a special moment for all selected, of course, and for Adam and Jenny it will be a first GB vest at Senior level. Erin has featured at a European Team Champs.

Scots selected as follows:

Women’s 800m – Jenny Selman (Lewis Walker, Fife AC)

Women’s 1500m – Erin Wallace (Andy Young, Giffnock North AC)

Men’s 60m – Adam Thomas (Bracknell AC)

Men’s 800m – Guy Learmonth (Justin Rinaldi, Lasswade)

Men’s 1500m – Neil Gourley (Ben Thomas, Giffnock North)

Bracknell AC sprinter Adam broke the Scottish 60m Record at the weekend with a 6.56 run to win the British Indoor gold and, at 26, his call-up is reward for many years of hard work.

That’s a similar story to Fife AC’s Selman, who has made big improvements over the past year or two, culminating in a first British title at Birmingham on Sunday when she took 800m gold.

Jenny was selected for the 2009 European Juniors in 2009 but has bridged that long gap now in spectacular fashion – with a 31^st birthday to come next week!

Guy is picked once again after a silver medal on Sunday which took his British Indoor tally over the years to a remarkable 10 medals.

Neil features in the 1500m alongside Piers Copeland after taking silver to the Englishman on Sunday afternoon.
