Scotstoun gets ready after facility upgrade

VP-Glasgow are is proud to play their part in the King’s Baton Relay celebrations as the Baton visits the club’s annual championships at Scotstoun.

The event on Sunday (July 19) will bring the excitement of Glasgow 2026 directly to one of Scotland’s leading athletics clubs.

The visit forms part of the reimagined King’s Baton Relay programme, which is taking the Baton to communities, sporting events and festivals across Scotland in the lead-up to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony.

Hosted at the club’s championship event, the Baton visit will provide athletes, coaches, volunteers and families with a unique opportunity to celebrate Scotland’s sporting future while showcasing the strength and success of grassroots athletics in Glasgow.

The King’s Baton Relay visit reflects the club’s long-standing commitment to inspiring participation, promoting excellence and creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy athletics.

‘When we looked at events taking place during the King’s Baton Relay, the VP-Glasgow Championships were a natural choice for nomination,’ said Colin Hutchison, chief executive of scottishathletics.

‘The club has an extremely important connection with Scotstoun Stadium, which will host the athletics programme at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. That makes this such a fitting stop on the Relay route.’

‘It is a tremendous honour for VP-Glasgow to play a part in the final build-up to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games,’ said Gordon Innes, club president.

‘Scotstoun Stadium has been our home for 96 years and, while the club has temporarily relocated to allow preparations for the Games, we are incredibly proud to see our facility become a Commonwealth Games venue.

‘Hosting the King’s Baton just five days before the Opening Ceremony creates a real sense of excitement and anticipation. It gives our members, volunteers and the wider community an opportunity to feel connected to an event that will inspire people across Scotland and across the Commonwealth.

‘For our young athletes, seeing the Commonwealth Games come to their own city and take place at the stadium many of them know so well makes the dream feel real and achievable. They will see athletes from across the Commonwealth competing on the same track and field that has inspired generations before them.

‘If even a handful of young people leave Glasgow 2026 motivated to join a club, stay involved in sport or pursue their own ambitions, then the Games will have created a legacy that lasts long beyond the Closing Ceremony.’
