Medal tally reaches 10 in Birmingham as Will, Neil and Guy land golds

Scottish athletes claimed no fewer than 10 medals at the British Indoor Champs in a fine collective performance.

And our scottishathletics Historian, Arnold Black, has helped put that podium haul into context – with the 10 earned in fact the second best tally in the past 25 years.

Scots claimed a remarkable 13 medals at the British Indoors last year and followed that up with another 10 over the past weekend as Will Grimsey, Neil Gourley and Guy Learmonth all won gold.

Three silvers and four bronze medals completed the kind of team effort we like to call #SALtogether. We send our warm congratulations to athletes and coaches and clubs.

Here’s the medal record (Gold, Silver, Bronze) for the past ten years . . .

With nine medals achieved four times in a row prior to 13 last year and 10 this year, there’s clear, consistent evidence of strength and depth at this event from Scots (and this despite a number of ‘big names’ being absent this year).

Guy Learmonth’s fourth gold medal was his 11th medal at the Championships, two more than the next best Scot, high jumper Geoff Parsons.

Parsons, with five gold medals, is the joint leader in gold medals with Rosemary Stirling/Wright and Laura Muir.

Will Grimsey took the high jump title with 2.16m, his first British title and the fourth Scottish high jump winner in the last 10 years.

Here’s a reminder of our 2023 medallists:

GOLD:  Will Grimsey (High Jump); Neil Gourley (1500m); Guy Learmonth (800m)

SILVER: Reuben Nairne, Ewan Bradley (Pole Vault); Jenny Selman (800m)

BRONZE: Alisha Rees (60m); Eloise Walker (3000m); Erin Wallace (1500m); Carys McAulay (400m)
