Silverknowes set to stage our Tru Wealth Scottish 5k Champs

When race organiser Adrian Stott started to promote entries for the Tru Wealth Scottish 5k Champs he described it on Twitter as #thefastone.

Adrian did so with some justification as detailed analysis of the Results in the past often showed it to be the best depth 5k event in Britain, although there are now a number of contenders for that title.

The Sri Chinmoy 5k race at Silverknowes had a very strong reputation pre-Covid and that’s not changed during a three-year break due to the global pandemic.

In fact, Friday evening’s event in Edinburgh promises to be even bigger and better with around 600-700 competitors on start-lists.

This year will see the Men’s and Women’s races enjoy separate start times in order to help accommodate the numbers involved. This should also mean a far clearer Women’s race finish than in the recent past.

Declarations open at 6pm and close at 7pm.

Men’s race start: 7.30pm

Women’s race start: 7.35pm

Medals are up for grabs for both individuals and for teams at Senior level and the full breakdown on those in the Scottish Championships are outlined on the Road Running and Cross Country Commission’s comprehensive website.

There are individual 1-2-3 medals for U20s and Masters. There are 1-2-3 medals for Masters in ten-year age brackets (i.e. M40, M50, M60 etc).

It’s also the second event of our Road Race Grand Prix and there are ‘shares’ available for those at the top end of the race as they chase target times as well as individual medals.

Those standards are as follows:

Women

A standard sub 16:20; B standard sub 16:35

Men:

A standard sub 14:30; B standard sub 14:45

The race at Silverknowes last took place in May 2019 and our two Senior champions on that occasion were Central AC’s Morag Millar and Kris Jones of Dundee Hawkhill Harriers.

It’s the tenth time the event has been staged at this flat venue on the Forth coastline, with the first having taken place in 2011 (and no race in 2020 or 2021).

Hundreds of athletes will have recorded their 5k Personal Bests during that period and we’re very hopeful of many more come Friday evening.
