Kev Campbell and Stefanie Tucker gave Cambuslang Harriers a memorable gold medal double at the Lindsays Scottish 5k Champs.

Kev broke the Course Record at Silverknowes with a stunning run of 14:01 – remarkably in one of his first-ever 5k races and on his debut at the Edinburgh venue,

Stefanie by contrast was on the podium for the third time here with gold to cherish after silver and bronze. And the Scotland international was thrilled to break 16 minutes.

Conditions were perfect after rain shortly before the start went off and no real wind resistance – and didn’t runners right through the field relish it.

Falkirk Victoria Harriers athlete Fiona Matheson set a new British Best for the W65 category with 18:58. That was a second British mark in a week for Fiona after 10k excellence last weekend.

Falkirk had the Men’s silver medallist in Ben MacMillan with Sean Chalmers of Aberdeen repeating his bronze of 12 months ago.

‘I have hardly ever run a 5k race so to win a Scottish title is really pleasing,’ said Kev.

‘I am more used to longer distances and represented GB and NI in the World 50k Champs a few weeks ago. I just had to remind myself on the start-line it was one 5k and not ten x 5k.

‘I was in the lead group early on and then just felt I was as well forcing it more. There were some guys there with faster finishes than me so the tactic was to try and have the insurance of a lead.

‘I’m enjoying myself in my running at the moment. I think running can change lives and I love getting the work done each day.’

Stefanie won in a superb 15:57 and pushed so hard for that time she actually fell over the line.

Taking silver in the women’s race was Grace Whelan of Central AC in 16:12 and third went to Katie Rourke of Gala Harriers. (16:16).

‘I was desperate to break 16 minutes here and the time was almost as important to me as the win,; said Stefanie.

‘To be honest I knew if I did that then I would be in contention to win.

‘The conditions were good tonight and I felt I could run fast. You will see that in the times through the field.

‘At Silverknowes I’ve had silver and bronze before so it is brilliant to win Scottish 5k gold and get my first Scottish title on the roads.’

In the Men’s M40 race, there was a gold medal for Adam Gray of Penicuik Harriers. Adam represented Scotland recently over 100k at the Anglo Celtic Plate in Ireland – so quite a double there (from 100k to 5k).

It was that kind of evening with storylines and top performances through the field and age categories.

Our W40 Women’s champion was Avril Mason of Shettleston at 18:35

Taking the U2 gold medals were:

James Alexander of Garscube (14:17) and Charlotte-Rose Burton of Edinburgh Uni in 17:12.

In the Senior team events, the 1-2-3 were as follows:

Men: 1 Cambuslang; 2 Edinburgh Uni Hares and Hounds; 3 Shettleston Harriers

U20 Men champions: Glasgow Uni Hares and Hounds

Women: 1 Edinburgh AC; 2 Central AC; 3 Shettleston Harriers

U20 Women champions: Central AC

Huge thank you to race organiser Adrian Stott and the Sri Chinmoy team. Thank you to the Road Running and Cross Country Commission, our Officials and all volunteers.
