Joma announce sponsorship for Weynay Ghebresilasie
Joma Sport are proud to announce the signing of elite marathon runner Weynay Ghebresilasie as their newest sponsored athlete, further strengthening the brand’s commitment to supporting top British athletic talent.
Ghebresilasie, 31, has established himself as one of Britain’s premier marathon runners since becoming eligible to represent Great Britain in international competition in January 2021.
Born in Eritrea, Weynay competed in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2012 Olympics where he served as the Eritrean flag bearer before seeking political asylum in the United Kingdom.
Since moving to marathon running in 2019, he has competed in several prestigious events including London, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam marathons, consistently placing in the top 20.
His breakthrough performance came in 2022 when he finished 9th overall in the London Marathon as the first British runner to cross the finish line.
Weynay’s PB of 2:09:50 ranks him third all-time among Scottish marathon runners and 21st on the UK all-time list. His impressive résumé also includes national titles in Scotland for the 10-mile and half-marathon distances, as well as the 2022 UK championship in the marathon.
The sponsorship deepens Joma’s already strong presence in Scottish athletics, where the brand currently supplies kit to the national team and many local clubs, including Ghebresilasie’s own Shettleston Harriers in Glasgow.
The Shettleston Harriers Women’s team – who have twice qualified for the European Club Cross Country Championships in recent years – already compete in the Joma kit ( as well as many Scottish clubs).
After recent training at altitude in Iten, Kenya, Weynay looks ready for the London Marathon on Sunday. His training regime has covered 100 miles per week in Joma’s performance footwear and apparel.
In short, Joma continues to demonstrate its commitment to elite athletics by incorporating these talented runners into the team, with the aim of conquering the main events on the national and international calendar.
