Marathon runner Freya Ross will miss the Commonwealth Games next month through injury.
The Olympian, who was named in Team Scotland by scottishathletics and Commonwealth Games Scotland in a second phase of selections in April, has now formally withdrawn from Glasgow 2014 because of a hip injury.
Ross, Britain’s best performer at London 2012 in the event, ran inside the women’s 2 hours 40 minute marathon standard in Japan in December when the 30-year-old clocked 2.35.19.
Freya’s absence will mean the Scottish track, field and marathon team will be without two of their five Olympians from London 2012 with Lee McConnell also missing out.
‘It’s with regret and deep disappointment that I can confirm I have had to withdraw from Team Scotland for the Commonwealth games,’ said Freya Ross.
‘I have suffered from a hip injury for the past few weeks and while the prognosis is good for a full return to competitive running, it is affecting my training.
‘It is obviously a difficult decision but one which has been taken in close consultation with my coach, Steve Jones; scottishathletics; the sportscotland institute of sport support staff and Commonwealth Games Scotland.
‘I would like to thank them – and my family and friends – for their help over the past weeks.
‘I would like to offer my support to every athlete in every sport involved for Glasgow 2014 because, having been to Delhi in 2010, I know all about the excitement and pride they will feel about representing Scotland at a Commonwealth Games. I’m sure it will be very exciting – good luck!’
The full Team Scotland announcement is due on Thursday at Stirling Castle.
