The Alan Bertram Memorial

The Final Fling

Saturday 30 August

Craigswood Sports Centre, Livingston, EH54 5ER

It has already been a hectic and emotional summer for Scotland’s top hammer throwers.

The Commonwealth Games and the Senior Champs were the main focus for the likes of Hampden bronze medallist Mark Dry and perennial Scottish champion Susan McKelvie over the past two or three months.

Come Saturday, the hammer community will gather once more to remember event guru and much-loved coach, Alan Bertram.

The Alan Bertram memorial event, The Final Fling, takes place at Livingston on Saturday with just over 50 athletes having entered to throw at Craigswood.

It promises to be a special day for a number of people as Alan’s ‘Hammerama’ vision continues to be a reality in Scotland with of course six hammer throwers having featured in the Commonwealth finals – with Mark Dry winning Scotland’s first field medal for 20 years with bronze.

Alan passed away in May 2013 but it is clear his spirit burns brightly in many of those he guided and it is great folk like  like Jim Green, Hugh Murray, Howard Perkins, Susan McKelvie, Andy Frost and Lorraine Shaw continue to work to maintain his legacy.

There’s a fine tribute to ‘Mr Hammer’ from Jason Henderson of Athletics Weekly online should you wish to learn a little more about him.

Good luck to everyone taking part or helping out this weekend at Livingston from all at scottishathletics.

*All the start-lists and timetable for Saturday’s event are online on the fixture page on our events section.
