Logan Rees smashed the Course Record to claim his first Scottish 5K Championship gold at Silverknowes.

It was a night of high drama beside the seaside in Edinburgh with Morag Millar taking the title for the third time in her career in a similarly close Women’s race.

Sunlight and windy conditions made for a familiar backdrop – and the times collectively were as fast as they often are in this event (34 men went sub 15 minutes).

Faster than ever before, in point of fact, at the very sharp end of the Men’s race as all three medallists broke the existing 14:12 Course Record (set by Jamie Crowe in 2023).

Logan surged through over the final stretch to win in 14:04 with Jamie MacKinnon (Cambuslang Harriers) only two seconds back and Sean Chalmers (Aberdeen AAC) third in 14:08.

To add to the excitement, there were the now traditional – and coveted – pineapples for the medallists. Well done, race organiser Adrian Stott, Sri Chinmoy and all our officials and volunteers.

‘I have not raced this event for seven years and the standard was really high,’ said Logan.

‘We’re all pushing each other on and you have seen that with three men inside the previous Course Record. I was second that last time, in 2018. So it was nice to win gold.

‘I think I timed it right and Sean, Jamie and myself were all kind of taking turns over the last half kilometre or so. I only really got ahead when we moved onto the grass close to the finish gantry.

Cambuslang Harriers took the Men’s team golds with a superb effort that amassed only 12 points with Callum Tharme in fourth and Ryan Thomson at sixth. Central AC took silvers and the bronzes headed to Fife AC.

Millar was home in 15:57 to finish first – just – of Nancy Scott (Edinburgh AC) in 15:59 and Lyn McKenna (Shettleston Harriers) in 16:03.

Evergreen Morag headed the scramble for the line to add to her title wins here back in 2014 and 2019.

‘I’ve won here before and set my 5k road PB here so it is a good venue for me,’ she said, after winning in 15:57 minutes.

‘I think I was third coming into the final stages with Nancy and Lyn just ahead. But I managed to pull out a bit more and finish fast.

‘I raced the Black Rock 5 last week and that was good preparation. I am still chasing times for myself in my age group – and it is something I am looking towards for next year because I’m turning 40.’’

Nancy’s good run helped Edinburgh Ac to team golds with Kirsty Walker at sixth and Hannah Cox at 21. Shettleston landed the silvers and the bronzes were headed for Edinburgh Uni Hare and Hounds.

There was an U20 Course Record in the Women’s race – a great run there by Millie McClelland-Brooks as the Inverclyde AC athlete finished in 16:06. Millie was fourth overall.

The Men’s U20 champion was Angus Wright of Edinburgh Uni at 14:30 (for 11th place overall).

Laura Haggerty of Kilmarnock won the W40 race in 17:50 as the M40 title went to Stuart Livingstone of Corstorphine AAC in 14:57.
