Six Scottish coaches and seven athletes have received welcome support from the Lloyd Cowan Bursary fund.

We urged athletes and coaches to apply for grants from the charity set up following the sad passing of the well-known coach two years ago.

Now the Lloyd Cowan bursaries will help Scottish coaches and athletes with important costs for training and competition over the next few months.

‘In the 2023 Lloyd Cowan Bursary, we have been able to support every Scottish Coach who applied and seven athletes,’ the charity told us.

‘The athletes received either a monetary grant or access to select Nike kit via our partnership with Nike London. All applicants also receive a 10 percent discount on Neuff Athletic Equipment.’

Scottish coach recipients:

Ryan McAllister, Linda Nicholson, Philip Owens, Francis Smith, Alasdair Strange, Shannon Waldron

Scottish athlete recipients:

Jamie Connor (Giffnock North), Callum Hendry (Glasgow Jaguars), Ryan Martin (Central AC/Stirling Uni), Hamish McKay (Aberdeen AAC), Reuben Nairne  (Glasgow Jaguars/Giffnock North), Jamie Phillips (Kilmarnock Harriers AC), Erin Partridge (VP-Glasgow/Glasgow School of Sport)

Shannon Waldron is a coach with Law and District AAC.

‘I am so grateful to have received the Lloyd Cowan Bursary,’ she said.

‘This funding will make a huge difference for our young javelin throwers by supplying equipment and resources while also supporting the development of my coaching skills and knowledge.

‘It means a lot to have been selected as a young coach who is fairly new to the coaching community! Thank you very much!

Alasdair Strange coaches a group for pole vault with athletes mainly drawn from Giffnock North AC, Kilmarnock Harriers and Springburn Harriers.

‘Being in an event that is very equipment and facility intensive, this bursary is vital to help further progress the athletes I work with, said Alasdair.

‘It will go towards equipment, travel and competition costs. I am very grateful to receive this grant.’

Erin Partridge is an athlete with VP-Glasgow and Glasgow School of sport.

‘Thank you so much for the Nike kit which arrived yesterday,’ said Erin.

‘I ordered a pair of trainers, a pair of jogging trousers, a pair of shorts, a long-sleeved top and a bag to carry my kit to school and training. It means a huge amount to me and my family to receive this kit.’
