Our Hall of Fame inductees savour the moment

Hall of Fame

The FPSG Awards Dinner was a memorable occasion for many who attended for all sorts of reasons – and none more so than our scottishathletics Hall of Fame inductees.

We confirmed on this website last week that 15 new names were to be added to the list as a mark of recognition for their achievements and contribution to our sport.

The initial seven-strong list featured Jim Alder, Wyndham Halswelle, Eric Liddell, Liz McColgan, Tom McKean, Yvonne Murray and Allan Wells.

And Allan was with us on Saturday evening in Glasgow to help scottishathletics President Leslie Roy make the Hall of Fame presentations to a number of the new inductees or their family representatives.

The 1980 Olympic 100m champion captured the moment perfectly.

‘Scottish athletics has a great past,’ said Allan. ‘I think it is so important that we remember and acknowledge that past – and the Hall of Fame recognition does exactly that.’

Lachie Stewart’s place in the hearts of so many was confirmed by a huge reception for the 1970 Commonwealth Games 10,000m gold medallist and others, like high jump record holder Geoff Parsons, reiterated their pleasure at being handed the honour.

Allan Wells – helped make the presentations to our Hall of Fame inductees on Saturday night

Aidan Smith of the Scotsman meets Lee McConnell

Lee McConnell was unable to attend but in a couple of media interviews was fulsome in her praise of the current crop of athletes and also her own delight at being recognised in this way.

‘I am absolutely delighted to have been put forward for the scottishathletics Hall of Fame and am very pleased indeed to accept,’ said Lee.

‘It’s a great honour to be bracketed with Scotland’s very best athletes.’
