Jaguars go forth: Scottish club relish strong Premier Division finish

Glasgow Jaguars retained their Premiership status with a fine fourth place in Eton securing a splendid fourth place finish in the league this season.

No fewer than 80 athletes have represented the team this season and the contribution of every athlete,  Official and those working tirelessly behind the behind the scenes has been invaluable in this excellent result in what is the top league in the UK.

With the battle to avoid relegation fierce, fields were strong and top three placings were hard to come by.

Alicia Paton (6.59.23) was delighted to record a PB and a sub-7-minute clocking to win the A string 2K S/Chase and Becky Dunphy won the B event (7.29.75) for maximum points.

There was more middle-distance success as Jessica Taylor made her debut with a third place in the A 3000m (9.56.49) matched by third for Emma McLennan in the B event (10.07.71.

U18 athlete Andrew Leighton took more than 10 seconds off his PB to run 4.00.02 for sixth in the A 800m race and in the B race Glen Griffiths finished a fine second with a PB of 1.56.63.

Calum McKenzie was third in the A event with 1.54.25 and followed it with runs in both the B 400m and the 4×400 relay.

There were solid points in the women’s events with Carolyn Cameron fourth in the A event (2.14.11) and Anise Macauley Orr 3rd in B event (2.15.67) while Caitlin Purcell ran strongly for third in the A 1500m (4.39.53) to pip twin sister Kirsty who finished third in the B event (4.42.69).

Kathryn Christie continued her fine season with second in the A 400m (54.76) while Lorne Kerr was close to her 54.44 PB with a 54.54 clocking for second in the B event.

They were joined by Catriona Scott, who had earlier finished second in B 400m H (66.78) and Anise Macauley Orr in the 4×400 for a great third place finish.

For Kathryn, whose promising career as a sprinter, recording 23.55 for the 200m as a 19-year-old, was interrupted by injury problems requiring surgery on both feet, and forcing her to take seven years away from the sport, this was her last appearance in the pink and black.

To have played a part in her comeback and to see her recording a lifetime best of 54.05 at Derby has been a real pleasure and we wish her all the best in the future.

The hurdles were high scoring for the team and Ben Heron was in excellent form recording a swift 52.15 for second in the A 400m H while Luke Gay (57.7) finished third in the B event.

There were solid performances from Scott Connal 14. 97 for fourth A and then fourth in the B for newcomer to the team Angus Rennie (15.31) in the 110m H.

Luke had a busy day completing the 3K Steeplechase in a PB time of 12.05.45 and also gaining valuable points in the 3K.  Sam Fernando was another athlete to do the 3K S/Chase and the 3K in hot humid conditions.

There was a gutsy fourth in the 400m H A event for Rachel Callan, who has had an injury disrupted season. Erin Campbell won the 100m H B event (14.45) with Briagha Cook a solid fifth (14.35) in a strong field.

The sprints team was boosted on the women’s with Alyson Bell finishing second in the 100m A event (11.66) and the 200m A (23.72) with Lucy Fraser second in the B 100 (12.07) and third in the 200 B (24.55).

They combined with hurdlers Erin and Briagha to finish second in the 4×100 relay.

A swirling wind made conditions tricky, but Struan Linton as always acquitted himself well with a fifth place in the A 100 with a legal 10.68 and very close to his PB in what has been a long season and a fine fourth in the B 200 (21.89) into a – 2.4 headwind.

Harris Mackie in his first match was guesting in the 100m and 200m and was delighted with legal PBs of 10.76 and 21.20.

Points were much harder to come by on the field with clubs bringing out their top athletes for this final match.

It was the throwers who were big points scorers with Euan Urquhart second in the A Shot (15.34) and Logan Mitchell third in B event (13.82) while Andrew Peck finished in third place (51.72) in a top-quality field in the discus.

Bera Ajala competed in all three jumps events and Euan Wallace had his best High Jump since 2024 with a 1.82 clearance.

In the women’s high jump, it was fourth in the A event for Katherine Fowler (1.63) and fourth in the B event for heptathlete Amy Kennedy (1.53).

Sara Barbour did well to finish fourth in the A Pole Vault (3.43) on borrowed poles and Amy scored highly with a fine second place in the A Shot (14.11) with Alice Baxendale third in the B event (10.86).

U18 Sophie Robertson enjoyed the opportunity to compete with the 4K Hammer and finished fifth overall in a very strong field with 54.12.
