It has been a strong summer for our National Academy athletes.
A season featuring a home Commonwealth Games was always likely to command headlines and full attention but thoughts about the next generation are never far from the surface in our sport.
National Academy athletes contributed to strong Scottish representation at the European U18 Champs and the World Juniors (where six athletes selected for GB and NI was our largest in 40 years of that event).
So it was good to see some of those Academy athletes involved in the 4J Age Group Champs and making podium visits at U20 level.
Holly Whittaker, so close to World Juniors selection (denied a valid hurdles qualification standard by a wind reading ) claimed a superb U20 Women’s gold medal hat-trick at Grangemouth.
Holly and Emma Clark are both currently in the programme and after event wins on Saturday – Emma won the 200m and Holly the Long Jump – they met on Sunday in an exciting Women’s 1000m final.
The Aberdeen athlete prevailed with a Championship Best Performance of 11.61 with Emma taking silver in 11.81. The Aberdeen AAC teenager then added the sprint hurdles gold to complete her haul.
Anna Reid, Leanna Elliot, Douglas Knox and AJ Campbell were among others from our Academy landing medals at Grangemouth.
Springburn Harriers enjoyed an U20 gold double, Or, rather, the Crawford family did. Charis claimed Triple Jump success with a PB leap of 11.44m to make the top of the podium.
The same spot had been occupied by her brother, Joe, an hour or so earlier after Steeplechase victory. It seems triathlete Joe dipped his toe in athletics via the water-jump and other barriers.
Angus Wilkinson completed a fine U20 double in middle-distance.
The East Kilbride AC athlete was out injured for more than a year in his mid-teens so savoured his Grangemouth return with 1500m gold to add to Saturday’s 800m victory.
In the jumps, Shettleston’s Abraham Lanahan repeated brother Joseph’s gold at u16 level the previous day – with both jumping exactly 7.00m. Abraham also won the Trile Jump.
Jacob McKinlay, one of those Scots at the World Juniors, won the U20 Men’s discus with a throw of 56.75m.
Yougsters in the U14 age group, of course, won’t quite yet be looking towards their U20 careers or the National Academy.
Stepping up from our U12s SUPERteams, the focus was more about enjoyment and taking part in a championship environment (some for the first time).
Well done to athletes, coaches, clubts . . . and parents.
