Monifieth High School have been crowned the scottishathletics National Giant Heptathlon winners for 2018 after winning the Tayside and Fife Regional Final with the highest points total nationally.
The Giant Heptathlon forms part of scottishathletics participation pathway and through the involvement of local clubs offers a route for young athletes into mainstream athletics.
The Giant Heptathlon is a test of speed, endurance, skill and physical ability with each competitor taking part in seven different events. Each athletes individual score is added to that of their teammates to determine the total score for each school. The school total is then entered into a league table (below) with the top scorers from across the five regions becoming this year’s National Giant Heptathlon winners.
With a slightly re-structured Regional Final in Grampian, this year’s Regional Finals had 29 schools participating and competing for the National Giant Heptathlon Title. Each school enters a team of 14 athletes (seven boys and seven girls) and the Regional Finals took place at the following venues:
*Grampian – Aberdeen Sports Village
*Tayside & Fife – Dundee & Angus College
*Central – The Peak, Stirling Sports Village
*East – Jack Kane Centre, Edinburgh Leisure
*West – On-X, Renfrewshire Leisure
We would like to take this opportunity to thank each of the venues for their support with planning and delivering the Regional Finals and we look forward to working with them all again in future.
The winning Monifieth High School team ran up a grand total of 15,288 points at the Tayside and Fife Regional Final edging out this year’s National Runners-Up, Clydeview Academy from Inverclyde by only 92 points (15,196). Last year’s National Champions, Balfron High School, were pipped to the post in the Central Regional Final by McLaren High School who finished third nationally on 15,175 points.
Harlaw Academy were the top scorers in Grampian and Linlithgow Academy were the winners at the East Regional Final.
scottishathletics would like to extend our thanks to the many volunteers, clubs, local authority partners, Active Schools Coordinators and teachers that assisted in the delivery of Giant Heptathlon.
In particular, we would like to thank the delivery team at Sportshall Associates, the students from NESCOL, Dundee & Angus College, West Lothian College, Renfrew School of Sport and our own Sportshall Co-ordinator, Harry Baird, who has done an excellent job of planning and delivering the Giant Heptathlon events.
Finally, we would like to congratulate all the athletes that competed in the event and made this year’s Giant Heptathlon a great success.
