Medal moment again: Megan true grit lands 5000m bronze and Scottish Native Record

Magnificent Megan Keith claimed bronze in the Women’s 5000m amid a thrilling Thursday night finale at Scotstoun.

And the Inverness Harriers also took down emphatically the Scottish Native Record with 14:49.10 her time.

Australia’s Rose Davies made it a gold double after her 10,000m win – just edging clear of her team-mate Jessica Hull to win in 14:44.59.

Megan had stayed with the pace throughout and then went to the front with four laps remaining.

Kicking on more than one occasion, she held off all challengers until around 200m to go and then had to make sure of her podium place.

An orienteer in her youth and then a superb cross country exponent, Megan now adds Commonwealth bling to a European track bronze from a couple of years ago in Rome.

It was also a quite brilliant recovery from the 10,000m on Monday night when she finished ninth and cut a frustrated figure afterwards.

Eloise Walker clocked a PB for 15th place as the Edinburgh AC athlete recorded 15:13.15. Laura Muir was one place back with 15:19.75.

‘I am just really pleased to win a medal for Team Scotland at a home Games,’ said the Highlander.

‘Even more so after Monday night and the 10,000m when I was disappointed with my performance. If you had asked me about track on Monday night I would have told you I am retiring from track!

‘I wanted tonight to not be afraid to push the pace on. I am comfortable enough doing that in a road 5k so I should not be different on the track.

‘So I did that when I could and with four laps to go. Then I tried to kick to hold them off for as long as I could and remain in the medal positions.

‘I had family here from Inverness and lot of friends and support. Going back along the track with the Saltire was special.’

In the Women’s 200m semis, Alyson Bell lined up in the second race.

A solid run saw her post 23.42 for sixth place as the Giffnock North AC athlete competed in her home city.

Alyson still has Women’s 4x100m Relay duties with Team Scotland on Saturday.

In the decathlon, Callum Newby and Joel McFarlane had solid starts.

After five events, Callum is lying sixth with 4084 points and Joel in eighth on 3916 points.

That was after good performances in the 400m.

The high jump didn’t quite go to plan for our duo. Both Callum and Joel cleared 1.88m to add to their points tally, albeit those jumps were not quite in their PB territory.
