Arnold Archive: The Extraordinary Mrs Chrimes
scottishathletics were saddened to hear of the passing of well-known athlete Rosemary Chrimes (Payne).
Rosemary was one of the Team Scotland athletics medallists at the Edinburgh 1970 Commonwealth Games when she won the Women’s discus.
That only tells half the story, however, as her victory came only a couple of hours after her husband Howard won hammer gold for England.
Later she became a highly successful Masters athlete including holding global records in her 70s and 80s.
Rosemary’s passing at 93 was announced by Halesowen AC, whom she represented in Masters Athletics. Born in Kelso (maiden name Charters) she was an Olympian and represented GB and NI at European Champs.
We send our thoughts to Rosemary’s family and friends across the sport.
