It was another excellent result for Glasgow Jaguars in the National Athletics League on a sweltering but windy day at Woodford Green.
A third place finish behind winners Thames Valley Harriers and Harrow AC leaves the team in fourth overall, on equal points with hosts Woodford Green AC with one remaining fixture at Eton on 22 August.
It was the best ever performance from the men, who finished in 4th place. The result is further proof of the growing strength of the team, with athletes taking full advantage of this higher level of competition.
Dean Patterson had a strong run in the 200M, finishing in 2nd place in the A race with 21.63 into a -2.1 headwind. There was a fine 2nd place in the 4×100 relay for Struan Linton, Owen Murphy, Dean and Stewart Greenhalgh in a swift 40.90. There was also a 2nd place in the B 4x400M mixed relay for debutants Andrew Peters and Dima Graham, alongside Lauren Abbott and Mhairi Patience (3.35.26). Mhairi was also delighted to win the A 400MH in 60.95 with a strong headwind in the home straight.
The women were in sparkling form in the 4×100 with the team of Ihnosen Ibhanosebhor, Alyson Bell, Sarah Malone and Erin Campbell winning in 45.82, a club record. There was another club record and huge PB of 54.05 for Kathryn Christie in the A 400M for 3rd. Lorne Kerr was 2nd in the B event, also running a PB of 54.44. There were excellent points in the 100M Hurdles with Holly Whittaker, despite being disappointed with the head wind, finishing 2nd in the A with 13.89. Erin Campbell came back into form with a legal 14.1 for 2nd in the B race.
In strong 800 fields Ewan Purves and Callum McKenzie showed their 400 speed, with fast finishes for an excellent 2nd in the A event for Ewan (1.54.30) and 1st in the B event for Callum (1.56.60). Anise Macaulay Orr was 3rd in the B with a competitive 2.16.76.
Alica Paton was delighted to finish her first Steeplechase after serious injury unscathed and finished 3rd in the A (7.18.10) with Becky Dunphy 2nd in the B event (7.42.33). U20 Andrew Leighton made his debut for the team and recorded an inaugural PB (6.49.05) in the 2k Steeplechase.

Once a weakness in the team, the men’s throwers are proving to be one of its strengths. Euan Urquhart finished 2nd in the A shot with a club record of 15.47, while Logan Mitchell won the B event (13.82). In the discus, Euan finished 3rd in the B event with a PB of 40.12, with Andrew Peck 2nd in the A event (51.18). It was Logan’s turn for a PB in the Hammer with a throw of 51.03, a new club record, as well as Liam Mcintyre who threw a PB of 28.28. The women also scored highly with Amy Kennedy 2nd in the A Shot (13.82) and Alice Baxendale 3rd in the B event (10.83). Kiera Maxwell was 2nd in the B discus with 43.02.
There were more good points in the Long Jump with Ben McAffer finishing 3rd in the A event (7.02) and decathlete Alister MacKay, in his first competition for the team, a fine 3rd in the B event (6.66) having narrowly missed a PB in the vault. There were valuable points for the women, with Briagha Cook 3rd in the A event (5.80) and Anna Cameron 3rd in the B (5.79). The wind conditions were very tricky, and Silver Nwabuzor was disappointed with her 12.16 to finish 3rd in the Triple Jump. Sara Barbour was 2nd in the B vault with 3.57.
Athletes consistently finished in the top 6 in top quality fields and in events where the team has traditionally not scored as highly. Full results can be found on OpenTrack.
Huge thanks to the Officials, who travelled with the team and gained maximum points.
Glasgow will welcome many of the athletes who were competing in Woodford to the Commonwealth Games, where they will experience Jaguars sponsor, Glasgow Life’s, “People make Glasgow” first hand. The team are grateful to Glasgow Life for their continued support, as well as Joma, as kit sponsors, and scottishathletics.
