Young People’s Forum announce Cohort Three

The third cohort of the Athletics Trust Scotland Young People’s Forum (YPF) met together on Sunday for the first time, marking an exciting and positive milestone as the new group begin their work.

Forum members were joined by mentors and lead mentors for a day focused on connection, discussion, and collaboration.

Cohort Three brings together young people from 20 clubs across Scotland, with 16 clubs represented at the inaugural meeting – a strong reflection of the breadth and reach of the Young People’s Forum.

The morning session focused on laying strong foundations for the next two years. Members worked collaboratively to agree on their shared aims, alongside the ethos and values they want the forum to embody.

The agreed ethos centres on inclusivity, respect for all views, taking ideas seriously, and showing determination to turn those ideas into action.

A clear set of core values will now guide the group’s work: communication, equality and inclusion, respect, teamwork, leadership, and empowerment.

The YPF will continue to focus on key themes including retaining young people in athletics, athlete health, and inclusion.

Reflecting on the day, Lindsay McMahon, who helps deliver the Young People’s Forum alongside Francesca Snitjer, said: ‘It was brilliant to see Cohort Three meet face-to-face for the first time.

‘Bringing together 19 young people, supported by three mentors and three lead mentors, made the day a really positive start.

‘The enthusiasm and ideas in the room were fantastic and we’re all excited to see how these develop over the course of the next two years.’

Forum members also took time to reflect on their role models within athletics, sharing who inspires them and why. From elite athletes such as Eilish McColgan to coaches and Officials working across the sport, the discussion highlighted the powerful impact positive role models can have on young people’s experiences in athletics.

scottishathletics qualified Official Jan Gammage was recognised for her encouragement and support in helping one Forum member to build confidence within Officiating.

The group received a welcome video message from Denise Lewis OBE, President of UK Athletics, who reinforced the importance of young people’s voices in driving meaningful change.

Denise encouraged forum members to use their platform to speak up, think big and help shape the future of athletics in Scotland.

The afternoon session took a creative turn, with members working together to produce TikTok content.

The activity helped build confidence, encourage teamwork and showcase a fun, accessible side of athletics, reflecting the personality of the group.

With a strong and positive start, Cohort Three of the Young People’s Forum is well placed to make a meaningful and lasting contribution to the sport over the next two years.
