Naomi lands brilliant bronze in Short Trail race

From Angela Mudge in Spain

Following on from Naomi Lang‘s fine bronze medal at the World Mountain and Trail Champs on Friday, Scots were involved in further events with GB and NI over the weekend.

The toughest event (time wise) at the WMTC is the Long Trail where athletes covered 82km on technical terrain and climbed/descended over 5000m.

This year’s race was won by America’s Jim Walmsey, a legend in ultra trail events. Alastair Graves (Ochils) sat around 90th for the first half of the race but finished strongly to come through to 73rd and fourth home in the six-man GB and NI team.

The final day of the championship was the classic mountain race. This started in front of Canfranc Station and climbed the mountain to the east. The course was very firm and fast underfoot with numerous switchbacks which made overtaking difficult.

The Juniors raced one lap, 7.6km and 380m. The U20 men raced superbly to take silver in the team event.

Rowan Taylor (Lasswade) climbed strongly but lost a few places on the descent to finish in 28th place.

Congratulations to Rowan on being on the podium with the GB and NI Junior men and to his family, coach Linda Smith and all at Lasswade.

Sunday action report on UK Athletics website

In the U20 Women’s race, Isla Paterson (Gala) led the team home to finish in 15th place with Jessica Taylor (Edinburgh) second home in 20th. Both paced the race well picking up places on the descent. Hania Czebreszak (Aberdeen) finished in 34th.

Scout Adkin (Moorfoot) led the British women’s team home in 16th.

It was Scout’s first up-and-down race since the trials where she badly twisted her ankle. Scout climbed well on both laps of the two lap course 14km, 780m but played safe on the descents. Nancy Scott (Edinburgh AC) had a great race to finish in 23rd.

In the men’s race Jacob Adkin (Moorfoot) climbed well to squeeze into the top 20 finishing in 19th and was first Brit home. Andy Douglas once again came through on the second lap to finish in 34th.

The men’s team were seventh and the women were eighth.

Germany’s Nina Englehard dominated the mountain races by clinching both the uphill only and classic world titles.
