Scotland international Rachel Callan wrapped up a gold medal hat-trick at Grangemouth on Sunday – and then admitted she would have been happy with one Scottish title.

The Giffnock North AC athlete took victories in the finals of the 400m Hurdles and the 200m in the first day of the 4J Age Groups.

Callan duly made it three successes in just over 24 hours when she won the U20 Women’s 100m final.

‘My main focus coming here this weekend was the 400m Hurdles and I never thought for a minute I could win three events,’ said Rachel, who is coached by Anne Stewart and Jackie Alexander.

‘The hurdles final was really tight (with one hundredth separating Rachel from silver medallist Leah Keisler) so I was delighted to win that one and then it went well as I progressed through the rounds in the 200m flat.

‘Sunday was just a wee bonus and to add the 100m title has made it a perfect weekend for me.’

Rachel raced for Scotland recently when she won the 400m Hurdles at the U20 Welsh International.

‘That was a fun trip because it is always good to go away with a team and there was a terrific atmosphere from the athletes and staff.’

Giffnock’s march to the podium in the sprints continued via the Men’s 400m final.

Murray Fotheringham had won the 200m on Saturday and added the one lap gold with a strong run in 48.50 seconds. That was a PB for Murray.

Meghan Porterfield was another U20 medallist on Sunday who completed a podium double – and made it four medals in two days!

The Scotland international was in action at the England Athletics U17 Champs on Saturday and took gold in the discus and silver in the shot.

Then, competing with a heavier weight as she moved up to the U20 shot at Grangemouth, Meghan landed bronze behind winner Amy Kennedy and silver medallist Paige Stevens.

As the championships closed late on Sunday afternoon, Meghan added the discus gold at U20 level with 42.52m.

‘It’s been a hectic weekend and we only arrived back up the road late on Saturday night,’ said Meghan, another event winner recently in Swansea.

‘But I’m really pleased with the way the weekend worked out with two medals on Saturday at U17 level and then moving up to U20 Scottish Champs in two events.’

Tendai Nyabadza hit the peak point of his season quite some time ago to win bronze at the European U18s in Israel.

The Harmeny AC athlete has also been ill recently but came up with a strong finish to win the U20 men’s 1500m final in 3:54.88

‘I’ve been a wee bit sick since the U20 Welsh International and this weekend so I am very happy to have been able to win,’ said Tendai, who is coached by Andrew Ross.

‘The medal in Jerusalem was definitely the highlight of the season. It was the main goal and very exciting. I am at 3:47 now in terms of my PB and with my season over now it is all about preparing for next year again.’

English-based Scot, Craig Moncur, made his journey north worthwhile with golds in the shot and the discus. Craig represents Shaftesbury.

In the jumps, there was a good performance to win Women’s U20 Long Jump gold from Molly Reville of Edinburgh AC with 5.79m.

Also in the field, there was a hammer double for Kilbarchan with golds for Dawn Russell and Lewis Craigie.

As always, the U13 Champs was well attended and keenly contested.

Laura Muir stressed via our channels that the key aspect as this kind of age group is about enjoyment and it was heartening to see many smiling faces from young competitors on Sunday.

English visitors made trips to the podium as well as our more familiar Scottish club vests, with our track and field Champs ‘open’ events.
