Our athletics community in Scotland is in mourning this week with the sad news that Eamon FitzGerald has passed away.

The well-known coach was a hugely respected figure across the track and field scene for decades.

Eamon was a coach with the athletics team with Team Scotland at the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games and worked for Scottish Athletics for a spell in jumps and Combined Events. In a voluntary role, he was national pole vault coach prior to being employed by the governing body.

Reflecting his contribution to coaching, Honorary Life Membership was bestowed on Eamon in 2017.

Even only a few weeks ago, he was a regular figure coaching at Pitreavie AAC a number of nights per week.

Earlier in his life, Eamon was a Navy high jump and pole vault champion

Pitreavie AAC posted this comment:

‘Life Member Eamon has been a coach, mentor and friend to many at the club over decades, remaining a familiar face at Pitreavie even in recent times and despite health challenges.

‘Eamon was a true example of what it is to be a coach and will be missed greatly at the club. We are all thinking of the FitzGerald family at this difficult time.’

Everyone at scottishathletics sends our sympathy to Eamon’s family and friends and to Pitreavie AAC.

*We will add funeral details into this piece as and when those are confirmed. Thanks.
