Key info for Roon the Toon

Roon the Toon has been a fantastic event in recent years and this weekend Kilmarnock is the venue for the Scottish 10k Champs.

The popularity of the race is such that no fewer than 2700 spaces have been filled for a Sunday morning run in Ayrshire.

And there will be scramble for medals at the sharp end of the race with Scottish 10k Champs podium places for teams and individuals on offer.

Event organiser Ian Gebbie from Kilmarnock Harriers has confirmed that there is real quality lurking in the fields for both the men’s and women’s race.

‘I am delighted to say that as well as that overall field of 2700 we have, within that, some really fast athletes ready to take on Roon the Toon,’ said Ian.

‘We have 10 women with sub 36 minutes performances to their name and no fewer than 21 men who have run sub 32 minutes for the distance.

‘The Course Record holders for men, women and the Scottish 10k Wheelchair Champs are all entered for Sunday and we hope to see them on the start-line.’

Plans are being made for a minute’s applause in memory of Lachie Stewart at Sunday’s event.

Working with Roon the Toon, we feel this is appropriate following the sad passing last weekend of one of Scotland’s best-loved athletics heroes.

The minute’s applause is scheduled to take place shortly before the start of the race (just prior to 10am). Thanks for your support.

Those athletes are Sean Chalmers (Aberdeen AAC); Annabel Simpson (Fife AC) and Sean Frame (Red Star AC).

The Records are: Men – 28:58 (in 2022); Women – 33:21 (in 2022); Wheelchair – 24:28 (in 2023).

In addition to those Course Record holders, three further former champions are expected to line up: Taha Ghafari (Shettleston) from 2024; Lewis Hannigan (Kilbarchan AAC) from 2023 and Stuart Gibson (Cambuslang Harriers) from 2017.

So six previous winners across three categories are set to make the start-line for an event laced with potential.

Medals are on offer to teams, as well, with three to count.

Check the Road Running and Cross Country Commission website for full details on the range of medals awarded for Scottish 10k Champs.
