SUPERteams new format – entries open now for regional heats

Wednesday 5th April 2023

Youngsters gather at our Indoor SUPERteams at the Emirates Arena in January – now for outdoors we move to Regional events and then a National final

Regional SUPERteams plan (story from last September)

The scottishathletics outdoor U12 SUPERteams event is an extremely popular fixture in the annual athletics calendar.

Athletes and clubs provide great feedback every year about how much they enjoy this first taste of track and field competition and why they can’t wait to come back to following year.

To increase the number of athletes able to take part in SUPERteams, and to reduce the travel requirement faced by clubs, a Regional Heat to National Final format is being introduced this year.

Hundreds of athletes will be able to participate in the SUPERteams format at low-key, club-organised, scottishathletics-supported events, with the opportunity to qualify for the National Final a few weeks later.

Our Competitions Team are now working with host clubs to plan events for this summer.

There will be two heats in each of the East and West and one in the North (based on the number of young athletes in each area in affiliation returns from clubs).

Each of the regional heats will take place between mid-April and the end of May. The SUPERteams National Final is scheduled for Saturday 24 June.

Online entries are open now for each heat via the links above. Entry costs £8 per athlete.

Clubs can be represented by any number of athletes in each heat and can choose any of the five heats to attend. However, a single cub can only be represented in ONE heat (i.e. clubs cannot send some members to one heat and others to another).

Regional Heats Information

  • During the heats, instead of competing as teams, athletes will compete as individuals in three SUPERteams events. This allows any number of athletes from any club to take part without relying on others to form a full team.
  • The event will be open to athletes in the U12 age group. In Summer 2023, this means they will be at least 9 on the day of the FINAL and born after 31/08/11.
  • Athletes will take part in a short sprint, a jump and a throw, with fun non-scoring relays offered for on-the-day teams at the end of each Regional Heat. The individual events offered in each heat are confirmed on the fixture page for each event. The National Final will include 75m, long jump, turbo javelin, and will also include a team 4x100m relay.
  • SUPERteams teams in the regional heats will be made up of the four highest-scoring athletes from the same club. Each team will be made up of at least 2 girls and maximum of 2 boys (ie. 2 girls + 2 boys, 3 girls + 1 boy or 4 girls, depending on individual scores).
  • The top-scoring eight teams in each regional heat will progress to the National Final
