British Athletics website team announcement
Five Scots will head for Rome next month for the European Championships.
British Athletics have named a team of 70 athletes for the event in Italy which runs from June 7-12.
And we’re pleased to note no fewer than five top Scots will be involved with others, of course, retaining their focus on the Olympics.
*Erin Wallace will compete in the Women’s 800m
*Jemma Reekie will compete in the Women’s 1500m
*Megan Keith and Eilish McColgan will race in the Women’s 10,000m
*Neil Gourley will race in the Men’s 1500m
We send our warm congratulations to these athletes and their families and coaches.
It is appropriate, too, for us to note and highlight on these occasions the key development role played by clubs with these athletes over a number of years – Giffnock North (Erin and Neil); Kilbarchan AAC (Jemma); Inverness Harriers and Edinburgh Uni Hare and Hounds (Megan) and Dundee Hawkhill Harriers (Eilish).
Well done, also, to the coaches involved as follows: Trevor Painter (Erin), Jon Bigg (Jemma), Ross Cairns (Megan), Liz McColgan (Eilish) and Stephen Haas (Neil).
Head Coach Paula Dunn commented:
‘I am really pleased with the team we have announced today that will compete in the European Athletics Championships.
‘It is incredibly strong with a high number of athletes feeling that Rome will form an important part of their preparations for Paris.
‘For some athletes, winning a medal in Rome will be the perfect preparation for the Olympics, for others competing here will provide a benchmark as to where they are, knowing that their peak performance needs to come at the start of August.
‘There is also a good blend of athletes who can use this championship to step-up and fuel their aims of qualifying for Paris and onto Tokyo World Championships in 2025.’
