Picked for Scotland! Selections for XC at Liverpool

Megan Keith leads Scottish hopes for Euro Cross selection in Liverpool this weekend.

The GB and NI international, on the podium in the event in two age groups in recent years including her U20 hold in Dublin, is chasing a place in the British U23 Women’s team for Belgium.

Victory in the British Cross Challenge event in Cardiff a couple of weeks ago bodes well for the Inverness Harriers/Edinburgh Uni Hare and Hounds athlete.

Two dozen runners represent Scotland at Sefton Park on Merseyside and our Lindsays Short Course XC winner, Eloise Walker, is in the same U23 bracket as Megan.

Fellow Lanark champion Jamie Crowe chases GB and NI selection in the Senior Men’s race with the Scotland picks there also featuring Scott Stirling of Falkirk Vics, Freddie Carcas of Edinburgh AC and England-based Angus McMillan.

We wish all the athletes and their families, coaches and clubs all the very best across the mud in Liverpool.

*The Euro Cross will take place in Brussels on Sunday 10 December. The GB and NI selections are expected to be announced next Tuesday.

We have been taking a brief look at some of the stories behind the athletes picked for Scotland for Liverpool.

And love this one about Lynn McKenna. That’s Lynn in the centre of the photo above as 15-year-old at a Lindsays Trophy presentation for Giffnock North and made by Eilish McColgan.

Now, eight years later, the Shettleston Harriers/Glasgow Uni athlete – the Scottish 5k champion on the road – wins her first vest at XC at Liverpool. As Lynn herself put it: ‘Sticking around pays off!

Great message that for athletes of all ages . . .

Looking at more back stories behind the selections for Liverpool XC this weekend . . .

In the Senior Women’s team, Stefanie Tucker of Cambuslang Harriers lands a first international vest at the age of 24 after making progress in recent years via Glasgow Uni, Aberdeen AAC and Aberdeen Uni. We understand Stefanie played hockey until her late teens.

In the U20 Men’s team, there is a place for Livingston/Glasgow Uni Hare and Hounds athlete, Andrew McGill.

Bronze medallist at the Scottish Student Sport XC last weekend, Andrew is the grandson of well-known Scottish Olympian, Frank Clement.
