Four Scots are selected for GB and NI team for European Indoors

Four Scots have been named in the British selection for the European Indoors in Turkey.

GB and Ni will be represented by 31 athletes at the event in Istanbul on March 2-5.

Laura Muir will bid for her seventh European title as she races in the 1500m with Neil Gourley one of two picks in the men’s event at that distance.

Guy Learmonth was confirmed for the 800m after winning his fourth British Indoor title.

And Carys McAulay, another of the 10 Scottish medallists in Birmingham, is picked for the Women’s 4x400m Relay team.

It is a first Senior GB and NI selection for Carys, who went to the World Juniors back in 2015 and suffered injury disappointment at the Commonwealth Games last summer with Team Scotland.

Scots selected (with event, coach and club)

1500m: Neil Gourley (Stephen Haas, Giffnock North)

800m: Guy Learmonth (Justin Rinaldi, Lasswade)

4x400m Relay: Carys McAulay (Nick Dakin, Trafford)

1500m: Laura Muir (Andy Young, Dundee Hawkhill)

The Scottish cohort counts as around 13 percent of the GB and NI team for Istanbul.

‘I have been pleased to see that a number of athletes have stepped up during this indoor season, which means we are able to select a team who have demonstrated current form this year to perform competitively on the European stage,’ said Stephen Maguire, Technical Director at UKA.

‘We have a really exciting group of athletes in this team which includes global stars, and also a number of athletes who are continuing their development in the sport and they will learn a lot from this Championship experience.

‘Historically, this has been a Championship in which the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team has thrived, and I am confident the selection panel has selected a squad which will be battling for medals and reaching finals in Istanbul.’
