Honours list – Athletics Weekly round-up
The New Year Honours list brought welcome recognition for one of the best-known club figures in athletics in Scotland.
David Cooney has been a powerful club leader at Cambuslang Harriers over a long number of years as well as competing as a Masters athlete.
In a number of roles, David’s enthusiasm and leadership has guided Cambuslang to much success for a relatively small club.
Even now, as a Past President, he remains heavily involved and over the years his ‘duties’ have included reporting club events for media outlets in order to best spread the word on our sport.
Congratulations to Dave on being the recipient of the British Empire Medal this weekend.

As 2022 draws to a close, I want to say a big thank you to the clubs, coaches, athletes, officials and volunteers who have made this an amazing year for @scotathletics Here’s hoping for another big year in 2023 🏴
— David Ovens (@OvensDavid) December 30, 2022
As 2022 ended and we turned thoughts towards 2023, our chair David Ovens expressed his thanks to the sport for all your efforts over the past 12 months.
Membership numbers continue to make a strong recovery post-Covid as those within the sport support us as national governing body.
And the overarching #SALtogether approach – where all facets of the sport look to work together to try and raise standards – has been evident in so many areas.
Happy New Year and best wishes for 2023.
