Scottish Record! Jake breaks mile mark in Oslo as Laura, Beth both second

Jake Wightman came up with a superb run in Oslo for third in the Dream Mile at the Diamond League to land a new Scottish Record.

Jake’s third place finish in 3:50.30 behind race winner Jakob Ingebrigtsen took down a Sottish Mile Record mark held by Graham Williamson (3:50.64) since 1982.

Neil Gourley was fourth in the race with a good PB of 3:52.91 and is now fourth on the all-time list.

‘I believe that’s the Scottish Record which is good but I had hoped to get sub 3:50,’ said Jake, with Ingebrigtsen at 3:46.46 to threaten the European Record that Steve Cram has held for 37 years (at 3:46.32).

‘To be honest right from the start of the race I was wondering what a last lap would be like given how hot the pace was for most of the race.

‘Fair play to Jakob and Ollie Hoare for being able to run 3:46 and 3:47 on the night. That’s fantastic. But I am in a good place for this stage of the year and I feel I am ready for the British Champs.’

Laura Muir took second in her 800m race as she clocked 1:58.09 behind winner Keely Hodgkinson, as the Englishwoman clocked 1:57.71 at the front of a high calibre field.

That depth of quality was confirmed by Jemma Reekie running 1:59.80 yet having to settle for eighth place. For Laura, it was a second run in 48 hours after 1:57.23 in Manchester on Tuesday night.

Beth Dobbin took second in her Women’s 200m race with her run of 23.01 improving her Season’s Best by three hundredths of a second.

Eilish McColgan was a DNF in a strong Women’s 5000m race. Eilish later confirmed she ‘should not have raced’ after picking up a cold but thankfully there were no injury issues.
