Four picked for Euro U23; Enter Trail Champs

Alisha Rees, Jemma Reekie, Michael Olsen and George Evans – all picked by British Athletics for Euro U23s

Four Scottish athletes are celebrating selections from British Athletics for the European U23 Champs.

The event is coming up in Gavle, Sweden, on July 11-14, and a 57-strong team will represent GB and NI.

And there are four Scots named on the team – with Jemma Reekie of Kilbarchan AAC doubling up in the 800m and the 1500m.

Edinburgh AC sprint duo Michael Olsen and Alisha Rees are each named in the 4 x 100m teams while George Evans (Inverness Harriers/Shaftesbury Barnet) is selected in the discus.

Olsen and Rees follow-up appearances at the World Juniors last year and it was the second day in a row in which a GB selection had featured two young Scottish sprinters – with Praise Olatoke and Fraser Angus headed for the Mannheim Gala this weekend.

Well done to the quartet selected for the European U23s and to their coaches Andy Young (Reekie), Jonas Dodoo (Olsen), Leon Baptiste (Rees) and Colin McCulloch (Evans).

It’s also a great reflection on hard work put in at clubs to help develop the pathway for our talented young athletes.

Jemma is named alongside Ellie Baker in the 800m after winning the U23 title at that distance in Bedford last Sunday. The Scot is the sole pick at 1500m.

ENTER the Scottish Trail Champs

The Scottish Mid-Trail Champs will be staged for the seventh time at the start of September – with Fife AC once again as host club.

Falkland Estate will be the venue for a series of races which includes national championships from U15 through to U20/Seniors/Masters as well as taster sessions at U13 and U11.

Sunday 1 September is the date for diaries and the Senior races are contested by men and women, in the same race, over a distance of around 10k.

GB international Kristian Jones won a great race last year from Andy Douglas with John Newsom in third to lead Inverness Harriers to the men’s team golds.

Lauren Dickson of Lasswade took the Senior Women’s gold in a season when she won GB vests in hill running as the silver went to Kristin Lownie of PH Racing and bronze to Catriona Graves of Garscube.
