Sophie wins Relay silver as six Scots relish World Juniors in Eugene

Six Scottish athletes were with the GB and NI team who headed to Eugene for the World Juniors.

That was the biggest representation of Scots – with a strong National Academy presence, too – in 40 years of this global champs at U20 level.

Within that there were a number of fine performances and all of these teenagers will no doubt benefit from this international experience in America.

Sophie Thomas won a precious silver medal as GB finished second in the Mixed 4x100m Relay. The team clocked 41.38 for the silver medals.

‘We have practiced a lot so it was really all about being able to execute at our best level and thankfully we did,’ said Sophie, who reached the semis in the individual 200m.

Luc Macleod was also a Relay finalist in the Mixed 4x400m Relay. After winning their heat, GB finished fifth in the final with Luc part of a UK Record there at 3:20.50.

Two Scots featured in the Men’s 800m. Early in the champs, Matthew McKenna and Josh Mungin both safely made it through their hears.

Unfortunately, both were to finish fourth in the semis and were edged out of a final place by a single second.

Discus thrower Jacob McKinlay was ninth in his pool. The Edinburgh AC athlete threw 57.17m.
