Broughton near Biggar was the venue for this year’s National Junior Hill Running Championships with medals on offer for U14, U16 and U18 athletes.
This year the 18 medals were spread around 14 different clubs from all parts of the country.
In the U14s, we had wins for Thomas Fraser-Moodie from Springburn Harriers as he outsprinted Harris Turnbull of Strathearn to take the win after an intense battle and several lead changes along the way. Bronze went to Harry Lever of Aberdeen.
In the U14 Girls, Rowan Johnston of Gala Harriers established a good early lead and grew it to over 30 seconds by the line. Silver went to Linlithgow’s Rose Martin with Annie Arnott of Central AC only eight seconds further back.
Yuen Sham Lam of Harmeny dominated the U16 Boys race, winning gold by over a minute from Lasswade’s Francis Ovani-Finnegan.
Andrew Watson was the second Harmeny athlete on the podium in third place
For the girls, there was a really dominant display from Emi Daunt of Edinburgh as she finished ahead of all but four of the boys and more than half a minute ahead of Niamh Doorley of Inverness in second.
Kate Riches finished in bronze place for another Harmeny medal.
In the final race of the day, there was the added incentive for the top two past the post of automatic selection for the Scotland team for the International Youth Cup in Italy next month.
Ben Hodson of Stewartry and Billy Sutherland of Ross County claimed these places in the men’s race, while Nancy Corrie of Harmeny and Lucia Connell of Strathearn booked their places on the plane for the women.
Our bronze medalists were Jack Foley of Moorfoot and Holly Simpson of Giffnock who will now have to wait for the final decision by selectors to learn if they will also make the team.
Congratulations to all the medalists and thanks to race organiser, Mark Johnston and team for an excellent day of racing on the hills.
With thanks to Phil Mestecky
