Memories are starting to fade from the 4J Indoor Season and very soon attention with turn to outdoors. And there’s plenty to look forward to.

scottishathletics have unveiled an exciting new competition structure for 2026, featuring refreshed District Championships and an expanded Regional SUPERteams series designed to inspire the next generation.

With development, enjoyment and opportunity at its heart, the updated programme will give U12, U14 and U16 athletes across Scotland more opportunities to compete, develop and enjoy the sport.

Please note: District entries open on Thursday 2 April

Regional SUPERteams

The hugely popular SUPERteams concept continues to go from strength to strength.

Clubs and young athletes will have the chance to compete in a series of Regional SUPERteams Heats, bringing together energy, camaraderie and brilliant team spirit.

Regional Heats include:

  • Edinburgh – 26 April
  • Aberdeen – 17 May
  • Kilmarnock – 17 May
  • Cumbernauld – 30 May

These events build on the success of previous SUPERteams competitions and maintain everything young athletes love about the format.

What to expect?

  • Team-based competition with a festival atmosphere
  • Athletes competing across sprints, jumps and throws
  • Mixed fun relays bringing the day to an exciting conclusion
  • A strong emphasis on inclusion and participation

Why? Because for our youngest athletes, belonging to a team, trying new events and celebrating together is what builds lifelong enjoyment in the sport.

The Regional format also gives more athletes the chance to experience that buzz of representing their club, and there is the opportunity to qualify for a place in June’s National SUPERteams Final.

District Championships

Alongside SUPERteams, the new District Championships will provide meaningful early-season competition for U14 and U16 athletes.

Taking place across Scotland on 16/17 May, these events will be hosted in:

  • Aberdeen (East and North Districts)
  • Kilmarnock (West District)

These competitions are designed as accessible, development-focused championships early in the outdoor season.

For U14 Athletes

  • Multi-event based format
  • Choose up to three events (two track + one field, or vice versa)
  • Points awarded for performances
  • Gold, silver and bronze performance standards recognised

This encourages well-rounded development and avoids early specialisation, while still rewarding strong performances.

For U16 Athletes

  • Traditional championship format
  • Heats and finals where appropriate
  • Individual medals on offer

This provides valuable experience of the competitive structures athletes will meet at national level while keeping the focus firmly on learning and improvement in the early part of the season.

Why the changes?

These updates strengthen the pathway from fun, team-based competition at U12 level through to more structured championship experiences for older age groups.

✔ More opportunities to compete
✔ More chances to represent your club
✔ A clearer development journey
✔ Competition that matches age and stage

By introducing Regional SUPERteams alongside the refreshed District Championships, scottishathletics are seeking to deliver a season that feels connected, exciting and purposeful.
