Strathclyde Park and the Tom Scott Road Races delivered once again as Scott Stirling and Annabel Simpson fought off an experienced pack to emerge victorious in the Scottish 10 Mile Championships.
This was a career first victory at this distance for Scott in what was the Falkirk Victoria Harriers athlete’s debut in the event, finishing in an excellent 48:31 mins, some 36 seconds faster than last year.
That was enough to hold off the hot-in-pursuit pair of Kevin Campbell (Cambuslang Harriers) and Callum Hawkins (Kilbarchan).
The top three posted the second, third and fourth fastest times ever at the event, as they were covered by only 11 seconds with Kevin at 48:37 and Callum at 48:41.
Conditions were extremely challenging as competitors had to navigate a howling headwind blowing from the north side of the loch, although in the latter stages of the race the sun appeared to welcome the athletes through the finish.
As promised, the race was filled with tension with the leading pack of six men inseparable until they rounded the rowing start and headed for home with just over a mile to go.
Annabel, meanwhile, made in three wins in four years over the 10 Miles, this time victorious by three minutes in a time of 56:20 minutes. The Fife AC athlete and course record holder has made no secret of her love for this event.
Whilst Annabel was the clear victor in the women’s race, the battle for silver and bronze was much closer.
Nynke Mulholland-Stummer (Inverclyde AC), second at the six mile mark, was gradually closed down by local hope Emily McNicol of Law and District AAC in third.
Whilst those positions remained unchanged following a final tour of the loch, the two athletes battled hard and were separated by just one second as they crossed the finish line. Another great finish!
A great day was had by all including spectators, athletes and marshals. Well done to everyone involved on Sunday and we hope to see you again next year for another exceptional celebration of the sport.
Law and District AAC would like to thank all the hard-working volunteers who helped make the event a success, along with sponsors Hydracrat, Tunnock’s and Airdrie Co-Op Funeralcare.
