scottishathletics have decided to mark a special year for the sport in Scotland with a series of awards to a select group of Olympians and Paralympians.
In addition to the presentations made at the Annual Awards Dinner at the end of October, we are pleased to announce ‘Special Recognition of Achievement’ accolades will be gifted to 11 athletes.
All those who qualified for a final or finished in the top 10 in their event in Rio – at either the Olympics or the Paralympics – are to be honoured with these celebratory awards.
Six Scots at the Olympics qualified for a final or finished in the top 10 – Andy Butchart, Eilidh Doyle, Callum Hawkins, Eilish McColgan, Laura Muir and Lynsey Sharp.
Five Scots at the Paralympics qualified for a final or finished in the top 10 – Jo Butterfield, Libby Clegg, Sammi Kinghorn, Maria Lyle and Stef Reid.
We contacted those athletes last week with the message as follows:
‘In celebration of a record breaking year in GB representation at the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics, scottishathletics would like to honour all athletes that qualified for a final or finished top 10 in their event (straight final) in Rio with a Special Recognition of Achievement award.
‘We are delighted to announce that you are to receive one of these awards. Congratulations again on a fantastic performance in Rio.’
Each trophy carries details of the event and performances in Rio, making it a very individual memento of the summer of 2016.
*The next edition of PB is close to completion now for scottishathletics members and our special 44-page edition will mark a memorable year with a specific section looking back at 2016.
