Scottish athletes enjoyed memorable medal moments in the Alexander Stadium at the last Commonwealth Games in 2022.

And it was a similar story over the weekend on another visit to Birmingham for the England Athletics Senior and U20 Champs.

Winning selection for Finland was the target in the younger age groups and making the GB and NI team for the European U20 Champs in Tampere in August.

Oliver Patton set a strong tone for Scots with his gold medal win in the 1500m on Friday – the Kilbarchan AAC athlete punched the air as he punched his ticket for Finland.

Oliver MacDonald followed that lead with 3000m success for the Giffnock North AC athlete ensuring his selection, too.

Kaya Slater will join them in the 100m with the Falkirk Vics athlete now having confirmed Scottish eligibility ( with dad Roddy having run for Scotland a generation ago).

Silver and bronze medal positions in the Men’ 400m for Dylan McCulloch (Pitreavie AAC) at 48.31 and Luc Macleod (Banchory Stonehaven) at 48.33 also bode well for selection (although they do not have the individual standard).

Matilda Brockley won the U20 Women’s Triple Jump to add another gold to the Scottish medal haul.

These were among the U20 highlights and the medal rush was significant at Senior level, as well.

Great to see real strength displayed by Scots in field events as athletes beat a regular path to the podium.

There were title wins for:

Nick Percy and Kirsty Law in the discus; Alessandro Schenini in the long jump; Callum Newby in the decathlon and Bera Ajala in the triple jump.

At Senior level, in addition to those five golds, William Ritchie-Moulin won silver in the sprint hurdles.

At U20 level, in addition to those mentioned above, there were medals for:

Silver: Charis Crawford, Logan Mitchell, Sophie Robertson.

Bronze: Reiss Marshall, Anna Reid.

It was a weekend of success for our Para athletes in Birmingham, too.

Ross Paterson, Adam Donnachie, Kirsty Soutar and Finlay Menzies all made podium visits.
