Josh Kerr claimed his first Grand Slam Track title – and the $100,000 prize money – thanks to a fine double performance finish in the 800m at the second event of the series in Miami.

World 1500m champion Kerr won the 1500m in the men’s short distance category on Friday to take the maximum 12 points from that race. Josh clocked 3:34.51 and beat fellow Olympic medallists Cole Hocker and Jared Nuguse.

Points from the 1500m and 800m are combined to produce an overall winner.

The 27-year-old Scot finished on 16 points overall with his performance in the 800m, two ahead of Canada’s Marco Arop. Josh clocked a PB in the 800m at 1:45.01 for fifth in that race (and fifth Scot all-time).

Kerr, who finished seventh at the inaugural Grand Slam Track meet in Kingston, Jamaica, last month, said: ‘I think progress was definitely the name of the game this week. That allowed me to come in pretty relaxed and just ready to fight for wins.

‘I definitely think we got some more sharpening to do before the end of the Grand Slam season. We’re having fun with it.’

Elsewhere in America, two Scottish female athletes demonstrated their progress with fine PB performances.

Angela McAuslan-Kelly took her Hammer PB to 64.78m and that is beyond the qualifying mark required by Team Scotland for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Aberdeen AAC/Princeton thrower is now fourth on the Scottish all-time list.

Rebecce Grieve took her 400m PB down to an excellent 52.08 and set a University of New Mexico Women’s programme Record.

The time also gives the Pitreavie AAC athlete a Euro U23 qualifying standard with GB and NI.

At the same event in Tucson, Brodie Young clocked 45.84 for 400m and Jamie Phillips ran 1:48.17 for 800m.

*At the Shanghai/Keqiao Diamond League meeting in China, Erin Wallace posted a Season Best performance in the 800m to clock 2:00.30.

And the good news there for the Giffnock North AC athlete is that time is inside the 2:00.82 asked for by Team Scotland for Glasgow 2026 qualifying.
