Alastair Walker pushed the boundaries once again for Masters athletics with another World Record performance in Glasgow
One year on from setting M65 best for 3000m at 9:59.02 at the Emirates Arena, the Teviotdale Harrier returned to the same venue to clock 9:57.18 with a stunning run.
It’s just the latest in a series of top performances by Scottish Masters athletes at global level and there was plenty of class, and grit, on show across the boards at our 4J Masters 3000m Champs.
‘I love racing here and if I lived a bit closer than Hawick then I think I would be in training as many days of the week as possible,’ said Alastair, who is now 66.
‘I felt the Record was on because I was feeling good and, for whatever reason, I am getting faster with age!
‘I was watching the clock and the watch and with two or three laps to go I was pretty sure what I would be able to run and get under 9:59.’
In the M35 and M40 race, there was a win for Darrell Hastie of Gala Harriers. Darrell clocked a new PB of 8:35.89 to post a new Championship Best for the Scottish Masters 3000m Champs.
In the Women’s race, there was a win for Cambuslang athlete Jacqueline Etherington in 11:09.55 to take the W40 gold.
Fiona Matheson, second in the race, won the W60 gold as the Falkirk Victoria Harriers athlete clocked 11:12.30.
