The Lindsays Scottish 10 Mile Championships and 62nd Tom Scott Memorial Road Races will be remembered as an attritional test of endurance, as athletes battled driving rain and winds gusting up to 45mph across an exposed Strathclyde Park.

In fact, many of those who raced later described it as the toughest conditions they had ever experienced and we send warm congratulations to each and every finisher.

In the Men’s race it was Lewis Hannigan (Kilbarchan AAC) who would master the elements best, claiming the 10 Mile title and Tom Scott Trophy for the second time in three years.

Hannigan and Callum Hawkins broke away early in the race and were inseparable as they turned off the loch just after the Mile Three.

It was as the pair headed up the hill towards M & Ds that Hannigan broke away, developing a gap which he never looked likely to relinquish, and eventually crossing the line in 49:08 mins, some 27 seconds ahead of his highly decorated club-mate.

Lewis Rodgers (Fife AC), who ran solo for much of the race, ran an excellent race to better his fourth-place finish from 2022, claiming bronze in a time of 51:18 mins.

The women’s race saw Yvonne McNairn claim her first 10 Mile title in a time of 60:10 mins.

It was a dominant performance from the Giffnock North athlete, crossing the line over a minute ahead of the 2019 champion Elspeth Curran of Kilbarchan (61:15 mins).

The gap between second and third was much closer, with Meredith Reid of Inverclyde a further 15 seconds back in 61:30 mins.

Speaking post‑race, Yvonne described the conditions as the toughest she had ever experienced in a road race, explaining that her 10-mile split during the recent Inverness Half Marathon had been quicker.

It really was a day when times went out the window, and the goal was simply to battle as hard as possible against the elements and get ot he finish.

Tom Scott Road Race organisers Law & District AAC are extremely grateful to all competitors who turned out in numbers to support this historic race once again.

Special thanks should also go to all the volunteers who braved the elements and to the staff at Strathclyde Park for their assistance.

A final thanks goes to event sponsors Hydracrat, Co-Op Funeralcare Airdrie and Tunnock’s for their invaluable support again this year.
