Through to the final: Field event duo Stephen and Angela make progress at Scotstoun

Team Scotland opened up with two athletes in field events qualifying at Scotstoun – and there was double progression to finals later in the week!

Stephen Mackenzie will contest the Men’s Long Jump final and Angela McAuslan-Kelly, one of our youngest athletes, held her nerve to progress in the Women’s Hammer.

So it could not have been a better Monday morning start for Team Scotland with nine more athletes set to compete in the evening.

Ullapool-raised Stephen was first out of the blocks to compete. Or, rather, first into the North Stand sand-pit.

A second round 7.75m leap was enough for the Edinburgh AC athlete to qualify as 12 men were put through. Stephen progressed in eighth place. He will return for the final on Wednesday night.

Angela, the young hammer thrower who went from Aberdeen to Princeton University in the United States, stepped into a hammer qualifying group full of high calibre athletes.

There were 12 to progress from 14 competitors – with the Scot ranked 13^th. But a first round throw of 60.59m edged her ahead of a couple of Home Nation rivals and England’s Tara Simpson-Sullivan and Amber Simpson from Wales could not better that over the three rounds.

Angela will throw again in the final on Tuesday night.
