British Athletics team announcement

Two Scottish athletes have been named in the GB and NI team for the Ultra Short Trail event at 2025 World Mountain and Trail Running Championship.

The event will take place in Canfranc, Spain, on September 25-28.

And great to see selections by British Athletics for Naomi Lang and Joe Wright.

This is the third combined Mountain and Trail Running Championships, where athletes from around the world compete in Long and Short Trail Ultra-distance, Classic Mountain distance, and Uphill-only events.

The Short Trail race will be 44.5km with 3657m of elevation gain and loss, including the ascent to La Moleta, which will see athletes climb almost 1500m in just 6km.

The team has been selected with the aim of an individual top ten finish or in securing a top five team finish at the Championships.

The team will join Thomas Roach (Lewes AC) and Kris Jones (Swansea Harriers, Doug Stewart), who were selected last November, both of whom were members of the team who won team gold in this event at the last World Championships in Austria in 2023.

After winning the trial at the Scafell Sky Race, Naomi (Carnethy, Lewis Walker) secured her  places on the team before three more athletes were selected for each team in this round of selection.

The GB and NI squad for the European Athletics Team Championships has been announced.

And there is a first Senior international championship selection by British Athletics for Scottish steeplechaser, Sarah Tait.

The top division of these Championships will take place in Madrid, Spain, on June 27-29. A strong squad of 42 athletes representing GB & NI will go up against 15 other countries across four days of competition.

UK Athletics has selected a full team with the aim of achieving the highest possible team placing at the Championships, taking into consideration current form.

Sarah came through the ranks at Lasswade AC and has been guided in her career by coach Linda Smith. Now based in Virginia, she is set to compete in the NCAA finals this weekend.

Congratulations to Sarah, her family, coach Linda and all at Lasswade AC.
