Kimberley Reed and Shaun Wyllie are heading to the World Juniors in Oregon next month.
The two Scots, gold medallists at the England Athletics U20 Champs last weekend, have been named by British Athletics in a first wave of 18 athletes for the event in Eugene.
Hammer thrower Kimberley has also been selected for a competition in Mannheim on July 5 and 6 which will be the first part of her preparation for the World Juniors, which takes place on July 22-27.
Wyllie posted one Commonwealth Games standard in 1500m but also had Eugene very much in mind after reaching the final in his event in the Euro U20s last year in Italy.
For Reed, the selection now is helping to significantly ease her disappointment at missing out on Glasgow 2014.
‘I was really quite gutted to not make the Commonwealth team after getting the standard three times and it has been a bit of a rollercoaster over the past few weeks,’ said Kimberley.
‘But I now think the World Juniors is going to be more the right competition for me at this stage of my career.
‘I’ve never been to America before and I’m told they are really into their track and field in Eugene. I’m sure it will be a great event and we fly over early to give us plenty of time to acclimatise and prepare well.
‘I’ve also now have the competition in Germany to look forward to. That squad is made up by a number of sprinters and I believe I am one of only four or so for events other than sprints and relays.
‘I don’t think my hard work this year would have exactly ‘gone to waste’ if I hadn’t made it, but I do now feel I’ve something tangible for my efforts. My ranking for the World Juniors has changed a bit in the past few weeks – I was at No 4 at one point – but hopefully I can throw well.’
Dad Scott has been coaching Edinburgh AC athlete Kimberley in recent months.
‘It has been stressful with a lot of competitions, training commitments and trying to make standards for Hampden and the World Juniors,’ he said.
‘But Kimberley has made good progress and the two selections for Team GB are very pleasing.’
All at scottishathletics would like to congratulate both athletes and their families, coaches and clubs on their selections for the World Juniors.
The 18 athletes named by British Athletics for Eugene include David Omorogie and Dina Asher-Smith. Read the full announcement here:
