The Scottish Student Sport (SSS) Athletics Outdoor Championships took place on Wednesday 22 April, bringing together athletes from universities across the country for a competitive and exciting day of track and field action in the sunshine.
A record entry total of 270 athletes underlined the continued growth of the championships, with a strong standard of performance and fun atmosphere throughout the entirety of the day.
There were several standout performances across the sprint events, with home favourite Struan Linton producing an impressive run to take gold in the men’s 100m.
Athletes from the University of Aberdeen medical programme, who featured in our recent short film Balancing Acts, had a particularly successful day, securing multiple podium finishes between them.
Briagha Cook claimed three gold medals, while Bradley Francis took two golds and one silver. Euan Wallace secured one gold and two bronzes, and Ihinosen Ibhanesebhor rounded this all out with a gold and two silver medals, underlining the depth, quality, and resilience within the group of medical student athletes.
As highlighted in the film, their performances across the day demonstrate that it is possible to balance the demands of a medical degree alongside competitive athletics, with each complementing the other.
In the team competition, the University of Aberdeen secured the overall win following a series of consistent performances across all disciplines. The relay events brought the championships to an exciting close, where Aberdeen dominated in both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays to secure gold medals and set new championship records, securing their place at the top of the table.
The University of Glasgow had a strong day to finish second overall, while the University of Stirling rounded out the podium in third.
Alongside the high-quality competition, the outdoor champs also featured a crowd-pleasing mascot race, which added to the fun and welcoming atmosphere on the day.
Overall, the event showcased the strength and spirit of student athletics in Scotland, with thanks to the Officials, volunteers and organisers who ensured the smooth running of the event.
