Megan and Sarah picked for World Road Running Champs . . . and Josh to race Jakob in Budapest

Top Scots Megan Keith and Sarah Calvert are celebrating selection for the World Road Running Champs next month.

UK Athletics have announced the Novuna Great Britain and Northern Ireland team heading to Copenhagen, Denmark, in September.

Selections have been made based on performance aims designed to maximise medal success and top eight placings at these Championships.

Megan Keith (Inverness Harriers AAC, Ross Cairns) will line up for the 5k race after winning Commonwealth Games bronze over 5000m in Glasgow earlier this summer.

Back-to-back UK 1500m champion Sarah Calvert (Livingston AC, Luke Gunn) will make her Senior Novuna GB and NI debut at the upcoming Championships as she competes in the women’s road mile. Sarah finished seventh in the mile on the track for Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.

Josh Kerr is heading back to Budapest for the first-ever World Athletics Ultimate Champs.

And the World Record holder in the mile and Commonwealth Games champion will face Jakob Ingebrigtsen over 1500m.

The Scot and the Norwegian have long sparred both on the track and in the media and their rivalry now looks set to headline the inaugural championship, which will take place September 11-13.

Josh, who won the 2023 World Champs in Budapest, will arrive in career-best form having set a mile world record of 3:42.66 in London in July.

Jakob, the 2021 Olympic 1500m champion, already held an automatic invitation to the Ultimate Champs for the 5000m as reigning Olympic champion in that event and will now contest both disciplines in Budapest.

‘I’m excited to race the 1500m at the Ultimate Championship,’ said Josh.

‘I’ve made some choices this season that have created plenty of noise, but I’ve always wanted to prove myself in the biggest races, against the best in the world. Budapest gives me another opportunity to do that, and I’m coming to compete for the win.’
