Throwers impress in Wales and New York; East League XC

Monday 29th January 2024

There were strong performances from Scottish female throwers over the weekend on different sides of the Atlantic.

Amy Kennedy competed as a Senior for the first time at the Welsh Indoor Champs and came up with a fine silver medal in the shot put with a throw of 13.50m.

And, in America, there was a weight throw indoor competition win (19.60m) in New York for Angela McAuslan-Kelly, who is on a scholarship in the States. That performance is a Scottish indoor best in the weight throw.

Well done to both athletes and their coaches.

*Also at those Welsh Champs – nice medal double for Perth Strathtay Harriers sprinter, Lois Garland. The Scotland international won the Women’s 200m gold and took silver inthe 60m.

Will Grimsey won the Men’s High Jump, too, with a leap of 2.15m.

There were other good performances in the States over recent days.

Among the highlights of those would be Andy Butchart over 5000m at 13:30.25 (second all-time indoors) and Joe Ewing over 1000m with 2:22.75 (fifth all-time indoors).

And note 400m specialist Brodie Young racing a 600m in New Mexico with 1:18.92 for the third fastest all-time by a Scot at that distance. Also over 600m, Caleb McLeod (Pitreavie AAC) went second all-time U20 with 1:20.15.

The total finishers number of 767 was a the best post-Covid turnout for an East League meeting.

Big thank you to all volunteers involved over the three meetings and particularly for Bathgate to  Edinburgh AC, Corstorphine AC and Harmeny AC for hosting.
