Magnificent Laura Muir claimed a superb Women’s 1500m gold at Birmingham 2022 with a run of 4:02.75.

Muir burst clear with just under 500m to go and never looked like giving up her lead with an awesome performance barely 24 hours after her 800m bronze last night.

Jemma Reekie had a good run and was in the hunt for third on the home straight before coming home fifth in 4:05.33.

The achievements keep piling up for Laura and this was all the more spectacular for winning two meals in middle distance in two days.

Gold in the 1500m in fact took her to 11 major medals in 19 finals at European, World, Commonwealth and Olympic level.

It also took the Team Scotland tally for athletics to six for the Games up until that point.

‘I had to draw on all my experience this weekend but I am thrilled how it has worked out,’ said Laura.

‘I’ve done some doubling up before and we train hard. We have done for years. But two events in such a short period of time is rare and of course you wonder about the effect of the 800m final and a 1:57 run.

‘I felt I had to be brave and go for it here – so when I broke with more than a lap to go I did know it might hurt a bit. Thankfully I had enough left and it’s a great feeling to be Commonwealth champion.

‘I wanted to make a big contribution to Team Scotland and I’ve done that.’
