Mel double wheelchair gold and our Relay teams break new marks

Melanie Woods made it a gold medal double on a Scotstoun glory night for Team Scotland.

The wheelchair racer wrapped up T54 400m victory less than 36 hours after her 1500m rerun success.

Melanie, thus completing almost 4kk of wheelchair track racing this week, surged home in 56.43 after a powerful second half of the race.

Noemi Alphonse of Mauritius was second and Bermuda landed their first ever Games medal with bronze for Jessica Lewis.

It was a special night in front of family and friends for Melanie, who is coached by Rodger Harkins, with a Commonwealth Games gold double following two bronzes at the World Para Champs last year.

Fellow Scots Joanna Robertson, fifth in the 1500m, added a seventh place finish in the one lap race.

Meanwhile, two Team Scotland relay quartets were in final action on the final night.

The Women’s 4x100m Relay team had set a Native Record at 44.89 in the heats on Saturday lunch-time.

And they improved that to 44.81 and seventh place.

That team featured Lucy Fraser, Kaya Slater, Alyson Bell and Alisha Rees. Alisha had to fight hard to deny the Gambia by four hundredths.

The Mixed Relay team featured Brodie Young, Rebecca Grieve, Bradley Francis and individual 400m finalist Nicole Yeargin.

They finished in 3:18.21 for a new Scottish Best as they took fifth place in the race (after a DQ for Australia elevated Scotland).

Well done to our two Relay teams for strong team efforts at Scotstoun.

Jax Thoirs took on the pole vault a dozen years after finishing fourth at Glasgow 2014.

On a windy night at Scotstoun, that return sadly went awry with three fouls leaving him with no height.

In the Men’s 5000m, Andy Butchart lined up within a huge field after also racing the 10,000m earlier in the week. This time the Central AC athlete finished in 18th place in 13:55.51.
