Laura lands her second degree; Inverness Campus 5k is North Champs

Laura Muir already has one degree from the University of Glasgow – the prize for a number of years of hard studying.

And, this week, the Scottish multiple medallist received an honorary degree as part of the University’s Commemoration Day, marking its foundation in 1451.

A well-deserved recognition for so many achievements in the five years since she graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 2018!

‘It’s a huge, huge honour, I didn’t think I’d be coming back here five years after graduating in 2018 to receive another award,’ said Laura.

‘So I feel very pleased to be asked and be back here among the cloisters and wearing a gown once again.’

Entries are coming in steadily for the Inverness Campus 5K on the evening of Friday 21 July.

This well-established event has a new dimension this year since it will also include the inaugural North District 5K championship for athletes with North eligibility and a team component for clubs.

However, it is also an open event available to all-comers and this is very much encouraged by the organisers to make the race more accessible to all abilities.

There will be two seeded races on the night, with the A contest likely to produce the faster times and district medallists while the B race will suit less competitive and recreational runners.

The Beechwood course is known as a flat and fast one so in good conditions, personal best performances could well materialise. Over half the available places have already been filled.

‘We are delighted to be able to run this event again at the Campus and including the District Championship this year is an important boost,’ said organiser Ross Cairns.

‘There’s a history of fast times from leading athletes here and we will be hoping for more of the same this year, although breaking it into two races helps the event to accommodate everyone.’
