Young Scottish hill runners ready for JHI races in Ireland

Thursday 12th September 2024

Young Scottish hill runners are headed for Ireland this weekend for their latest international outing.

Sixteen athletes will compete at Glendalough in the Junior Home Country International, which also incorporates the British and Irish Mountain Running Championships.

The races are in the Wicklow Mountains starting from where the Wicklow Way passes by the village. Both the U20 and U17 races are a single climb and descent with the runners covering 6.1km and 274m and 5.1km and 250m respectively.

Scotland U20 men will be hoping to retain their team title which they have won in the last two editions of this event.

Angus Wright (Edinburgh Uni Hares and Hounds) and Thomas Hilton (Moorfoot Runners) both competed in the winning team in 2023 and Angus in 2022.

Last year Isla Paterson narrowly missed out on a medal and hopes to make the podium this time around.

The U20 Women’s team also features two of the bronze team medallists from the International Youth Cup in Spain – Edinburgh AC duo Elsa McGregor and Jessica Taylor.

Good Luck to all the athletes.
