Top of the heap: Jacob wins second European title with Senior Men’s Uphill gold in Slovenia

Jacob Adkin is Europe’s new King of the Mountains!

The Scot who started his career a nmber of years ago with Moorfoot Runners won the Uphill Only Senior Men’s race at the European Off Road Champs.

Jacob emerged from the mist at the race summit in Slovenia more than two minutes ahead of the silver medallist. He clocked 49:21 for teh 9k course with Sweden’s Petter Engdahl at 51:28.

It is a second European title for Jacob who is coached by Gold Coast 2018 marathon medallist, Robbie Simpson.

‘It was tough, but my legs felt surprisingly good,’ said Jacob.

‘I didn’t know what to expect. It’s a great feeling. It was a good course. I don’t have the words right now, but it was a good day.’

Jacob’s sister Scout was fifth in the Uphill Only Senior Women’s race as the GB and NI team landed gold medals.

Fellow Scot Kirsty Skye Dickson was 12th as the third counter with Englishwoman Morven Goodrum taking the gold to spectacularly lead the British team effort.

In the U20 Women’s race, Nancy Corrie (Harmeny AC) was close to the medals in fifth place. Hania Czebresuk was the second GB athlete home with the Aberdeen AAC runner at 19th.

In the U20 Men’s race, Joel Gillan was ninth and Kieran Hardie at 15th. Lachlan Thomas was at 21 and Rowan Taylor at 39 – as that all-Scottish quartet missed the bronze medals by only two points.

Nancy said: ‘I was really happy to get top five, it was really good but tough with the conditions . . . you couldn’t see how far you had to go.

‘It was pretty tough, but I enjoyed it and the experience it gave. When they said the race would be in Slovenia, we weren’t expecting weather like this.’
